Guidelines for submission

If you are interested in becoming an author, please contact editor Slade Sanderson at s.b.sanderson (a character resembling a Swiss roll) uu.nl. If you were invited to submit an article, please respond with the submission prepared in LaTeX by sending the manuscript to the editor. Please use the provided template and keep the formatting to a minimum.

Article preparation

Manuscripts must be submitted in English. If you think this is a problem, please contact the editor.

The article you submit should not contain a technical summary of the research, but rather serve as a conceptual (or even “hand-wavy”) introduction into a mathematical problem. The text should be answering questions like “Why is this problem important/fascinating?” or “Where can the findings of this research be applied?”, as well as “What is known about this problem?” and “What is happening in this field of mathematical research right now?”

The .tex file should contain:

  • Title, max 80 characters of which the first 40 can be interpreted as a standalone subtitle.
  • Author name(s), together with the name of the study programme/track.
  • Main text should be about 1500 words long, with no subheadings. The first 40 words should serve as an abstract and the first paragraph should serve as the introduction into the topic. Using images, highlights, hyperlinks, audio files and animations is allowed and encouraged.
  • List of maximum eight references, not counted in the wordcount.

Striking Image

Additionally, we ask for a “Striking Image”: choose a wide, 3:1, high resolution image, between 300-600 dpi, that represents the article in a striking and eye-catching way. It can be derived from your research, you can create an abstract illustration, take a photo of black board, or even source the image as long as it adheres to our CC BY license. If you do not have a “Striking Image”, the editorial team will suggest an illustration for you.
